2-Year Advanced Training Program
Program Overview
The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) proudly offers a two-year Head and Neck Surgery Fellowship in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. This advanced training program is designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on experience in the diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of complex head and neck pathologies. Fellows will gain expertise in ablative and reconstructive surgery.
Program Highlights:
- Clinical Training: Fellows will collaborate with esteemed faculty to treat benign and malignant head and neck tumors, salivary gland conditions, and intricate reconstructive surgeries, this training takes place at two sites, New Orleans & Baton Rouge.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: The program promotes a collaborative approach, working closely with Radiation, Medical Oncology, and Speech Pathology to provide patient-focused care.
- Surgical Expertise: Fellows will develop skills in local, regional, and microvascular reconstruction, as well as in advanced ablative procedures.
- Research Opportunities: Fellows are motivated to engage in clinical and translational research, benefiting from LSUHSC’s cutting-edge research facilities and resources.
- Didactic Education: Regular educational sessions, tumor boards, and case discussions support a comprehensive academic experience foundation.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must have completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program.
- Eligibility for licensure in Louisiana is required.
Program Goals:
- To develop advanced surgical skills in head and neck oncology and reconstruction.
- To foster critical thinking and decision-making in complex clinical scenarios.
- To prepare fellows for academic roles, the fellow serves as a junior faculty member and is expected to participate in on-call duties alongside the oral and maxillofacial surgery residents.
- The fellow is encouraged to attend national and international meetings.
First Year:
- In this first year, the fellow focuses on Head and Neck ablative procedures, including surgical airway, working up head and neck pathology cases, which might entail:
- Pan endoscopy [Direct laryngoscopy, flexible nasopharyngoscopy].
- Benign & malignant biopsies for hard and soft tissue pathology.
- Laser ablative procedures.
- Managing Odontogenic tumors & cysts.
- Nerve reconstruction.
- Malignant head and neck pathology, including primary ablation & Neck dissection.
- Major & minor salivary gland pathology.
- Endocrine benign and malignant pathology.
Second Year:
- In the 2nd year, the fellow focuses on all head and neck reconstruction modalities.
- Tissue engineering
- Local/regional & free flaps
- Microsurgical techniques
