1-Year Advanced Training Program
Program Overview
The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) offers a prestigious one-year Facial Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship, led by Dr. Jon Perenack. This advanced training program is accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and provides a high-volume, hands-on experience in facial aesthetic surgery. The fellowship is designed to cultivate expertise in surgical techniques, clinical decision-making, and business acumen essential for a successful career in facial cosmetic surgery.
Fellows train in a diverse range of clinical environments, including academic, hospital, and private practice settings. Training occurs at Williamson Cosmetic Surgery Center & Perenack Aesthetic Surgery, which features an accredited on-site surgery center, as well as Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, University Medical Center Hospital, and LSU Health Ambulatory Surgery Center. This multi-institutional experience ensures comprehensive exposure to all aspects of pre-operative, surgical, and post-operative patient care in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.
Program Highlights
- Extensive Clinical Training: Fellows engage in high-volume surgical cases, gaining hands-on experience in facial rejuvenation, eyelid and periorbital surgery, facial contouring, rhinoplasty, perioral and otoplasty procedures, hair restoration, reconstructive surgery, and non-surgical aesthetic treatments.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Fellows work alongside multiple board-certified, fellowship-trained faculty members and participate in the education of LSU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residents.
- Advanced Surgical Expertise: Training includes state-of-the-art aesthetic techniques, minimally invasive procedures, regenerative medicine, and the latest innovations in cosmetic surgery.
- Business & Practice Management: Comprehensive education in clinical operations, financial management, marketing, and practice growth strategies is incorporated into the fellowship curriculum.
- Research & Academic Contributions: Fellows are required to complete a publishable research project and participate in monthly didactic seminars, journal clubs, and case discussions.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited residency program required for board certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS), Dermatology, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Otolaryngology, or Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
- A valid state medical and/or dental license is required.
Program Goals:
- To develop advanced surgical skills in facial cosmetic surgery and aesthetic medicine.
- To enhance clinical judgment and patient management strategies in cosmetic procedures.
- To prepare fellows for leadership roles in academic, hospital, or private practice settings.
- To encourage scholarly activity, including research publications and presentations at national and international meetings.
Fellows receive high-volume, comprehensive surgical training exclusively focused on facial aesthetic surgery. Fellows will develop expertise in the following areas:
Facial Rejuvenation: Deep-plane facelift, deep-plane neck lift, mini-facelift
Eyelid & Periorbital Surgery: Upper and lower blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, reconstructive eyelid surgery, canthopexy, browpexy, brow lift (including endoscopic techniques), midface lift, temporal lift
Facial Contouring & Volume Enhancement: Fat grafting, liposuction, facial implants, facial feminization and masculinization surgery, genioplasty, orthognathic surgery, hard and soft tissue augmentation
Nasal Reconstruction: Rhinoplasty (primary and revision), ethnic rhinoplasty, post-traumatic and reconstructive rhinoplasty, alloplastic/implant and rib grafting, cleft rhinoplasty
Perioral Surgery: Lip lift, cheiloplasty, post-traumatic reconstruction, soft tissue grafting
Otoplasty & Ear Surgery: Otoplasty, ear lobe repair and reconstruction, ear lobe reduction
Hair Restoration: Hair transplantation (FUT and FUE), PRP therapy, comprehensive non-surgical treatments
Reconstructive Surgery: Post-traumatic and cancer reconstruction, management of skin lesions
Non-Surgical & Laser Procedures: CO₂ laser resurfacing, micro-needling, radiofrequency-enhanced techniques, chemical peel, temporary and permanent fillers, neuromuscular blockers
Requirements:
Facial cosmetic surgery Training Fellows participate as primary surgeon or direct assistant in 125 or more major facial cosmetic procedures.
Including a minimum of:
- 20 Blepharoplasty
- 15 Rhytidectomy
- 15 Rhinoplasty
Remaining procedures include brow lifts, treatment of skin lesions, skin resurfacing, cheiloplasty, genioplasty, liposuction, otoplasty, hard and soft tissue augmentation contour procedures, chemical peel, hair transplantation, dermabrasion, fat transfer, facial implants and cosmetic laser procedure epidemiology.

Program Structure:
- Duration: 1 year (July 1 – June 30)
- Accreditation: Accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS)
- Operative Experience: High-volume surgical caseload across aesthetic and reconstructive disciplines
- Call Responsibilities: Office-based call only (private practice)
- Annual Salary: Paid fellowship through LSU Health
- Didactics & Education: Regular educational sessions, cadaver dissections, case discussions, and journal clubs
- Teaching & Mentorship: Active participation in the education and training of LSU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residents, as well as medical and dental students
