Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Non-Categorical Internship Program

The 1-year Non-Categorical Internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is designed for residents who wish to gain experience and improve their applications to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency programs.  The individuals who complete this program will gain extensive experience in various fields of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.  The program solitary mission and goal is to get you matched into a CODA accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Residency program! Thus, the month of July is designated purely for protected study time. The learner will not have any surgical rotations or call duty during July in order to prepare for the Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) exam administered late July.

During the Internship year, learners will provide patient care in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery outpatient clinic and operating room with appropriate supervision as determined by the attending faculty member and chief resident responsible for the service. Residents will be supervised by senior level residents when on call, when answering consults, performing procedures in the clinic / operating room until their clinical competence has been adequately established. Once it has been determined by the Program Director that the resident has demonstrated adequate clinical judgment, the Intern will have the responsibility and privilege of providing clinical care autonomously for the following:

· Trauma cases with emphasis on mandibular fractures, dentoalveolar trauma, and facial lacerations

· Dentoalveolar surgery

· Odontogenic infections with emphasis on extra-oral drainage

The resident will assist on more involved Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery procedures. Residents are required to read and understand assigned surgical and medical journals and texts by the Program Director, attending weekly preoperative surgery seminars, and monthly academic conferences which include Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery seminars, CPC's, Applied Surgical Anatomy course, Oral Pathology courses, Journal Club and others.

The non-categorical intern will split the year with 6 months in New Orleans and 6 months in Baton Rouge.  Housing in Baton Rouge is provided free of charge to our residents.
