The LSUSD Department of Periodontics is responsible for teaching both predoctoral dental students as well as graduate residents in the field of periodontics. The Department of Periodontics offers predoctoral courses that combine both didactic learning and direct clinical experience beginning in the second year, expanding in scope and student responsibility in the third year, and continues into the fourth year to provide the student with experience with continuity of care issues. Students also participate in the periodontics clinic where they are exposed to and even perform simple surgical procedures. The graduate periodontics residency is a three-year program with heavy emphasis on the clinical treatment of patients and clinical research activities. Residents are exposed to all of the contemporary nonsurgical and surgical modalities, including regeneration, dental implants, laser surgery, microsurgery and esthetic plastic periodontal surgery.
The Department of Periodontics has eight full-time and five part-time faculty members who contribute to both didactic and clinical instruction. Most full-time faculty members are also involved with research projects which provide students with the opportunity for exposure to research. The department also provides consultation services to all other clinical departments upon request.
