The Department
of Diagnostic Sciences
serves the people and
dental profession of the
state of Louisiana and
surrounding areas by
providing education,
scholarly activity, and
patient care in the
areas of Oral Diagnosis,
Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology, Oral and
Maxillofacial Pathology,
Orofacial Pain, and
Infectious Diseases.
Faculty members provide
educational content to
dental laboratory
technology students,
dental hygiene students,
dental students, and
postgraduate residents
in all specialty
programs.
Oral
Diagnosis
faculty members provide
education in didactic
and clinical settings
related to proper
infection control
techniques, obtaining
and evaluating patient
medical and dental
history, comprehensive
extraoral and intraoral
examination, and
development of
appropriate treatment
plans. Dental management
of medically-compromised
patients and the aging
population are covered
in several courses.
Faculty members conduct
initial examinations for
prospective patients of
the school's
undergraduate clinic and
several faculty members
provide general
dentistry services to
patients in the Faculty
Dental Practice (FDP).
Some faculty members
provide forensic
odontology services
aiding law enforcement
in the identification of
human remains.
Members
of the Oral and
Maxillofacial
Radiology
faculty educate students
and residents on the
fundamentals of
radiology, such as the
benefits and risks of
dental X-rays and
comprehensive
radiographic
interpretation.
Additionally,
instruction is provided
on advanced imaging
techniques, including
conebeam CT imaging
which offers dentists
three-dimensional views
of the oral and
maxillofacial region
that often are critical
for proper diagnosis and
treatment of patients.
Radiology faculty
members participate in
the FDP providing
advanced imaging and
radiographic
interpretation services
to private practitioners
and their patients on a
referral or consultative
basis.
Faculty
members in Orofacial
Pain provide
didactic and clinical
education in
temporomandibular
disorders (TMD),
neuropathic pain
conditions,
neurovascular
conditions, and sleep
disorder breathing
issues. They provide
expertise in diagnosis
and treatment planning
of new patients for the
undergraduate student
clinics. They also
provide orofacial pain
consultations to the
many clinics throughout
the School of Dentistry.
Patients with orofacial
pain concerns are also
treated and managed in
the FDP.
Oral
and Maxillofacial
Pathology
faculty members provide
a comprehensive
curriculum covering all
aspects of diseases that
can affect the oral and
maxillofacial regions
including clinical
presentation,
histopathologic
features, treatment and
prognosis. Students are
educated in proper
lesion evaluation
techniques and
development of
differential diagnoses.
The faculty members
provide clinical
consultations throughout
the school as well as to
outside dental
professionals and
patients through their
participation in the
FDP. Additionally,
through their work on
the Oral Pathology
Biopsy Service, faculty
members diagnose over
2800 biopsy specimens
each year, including
providing consultation
services to external
pathology laboratories.
Faculty
members of the Infectious
Disease (ID) Dental
Clinic
are committed to
providing comprehensive
oral health care to
people living with HIV
and AIDS. The clinic is
a component of the
multidisciplinary
Infectious Disease
Services available to
patients at the
University Medical
Center, New Orleans.
Continuing education
courses are offered in
all fields the
department encompasses.
Presentations are
provided by faculty
