Advanced education programs for specialty training in endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics meet the accreditation requirements of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and the eligibility requirements of the respective specialty boards. Candidates seeking admission to these programs must hold a DDS or DMD degree or the foreign equivalent, and students who complete the requirements of the program are awarded a certificate of proficiency.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN DENTISTRY

Postgraduate students enrolled in the advanced education specialty programs of endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics will be enrolled in the Master of Science in Dentistry program. The goal of the program is to develop well-trained clinicians capable of providing biologic, scientific and knowledge-based patient care. The program will develop potential faculty members with a comprehensive background of clinical experience, basic science knowledge, and an understanding of research methodology. II. Student must complete an approved publishable manuscript based on original research.

Each respective program director, chair of the department, or their designee will provide final approval for the project to be undertaken by each resident. The Research Methodology course is designed to help residents justify the project's need, develop the experimental design, and recommend the appropriate statistics to be used for data interpretation. Upon completion of the project, final approval as a publishable manuscript will be maintained by the respective program director, chair of the department, or their designee.

III. Student must complete requirements of the specialty certificate program.

Program Length: 24 to 36 months

The School of Dentistry Office of Advanced Education provides administrative support for the program. The School of Dentistry Committee on Advanced Education provides academic oversight of the program.

Residency and advanced education programs in general dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery also meet the accreditation requirements of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. The residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery satisfies the requirements of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Students enrolled in advanced education programs are bound by the same rules and regulations that apply to other students of the School of Dentistry, and they may be found elsewhere on this web site.

GRADING SYSTEM

For the Advanced Dental Education programs, students must maintain a "B" (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) overall Grade Point Average (GPA) at the end of each grading period (semester, trimester, etc.) during the program. An average below 3.0 places the student on academic probation. In most cases academic probation must be removed within one semester in order for the student to continue in the program. However, extenuating circumstances may allow an additional semester for removal of probation. If the overall GPA is not brought up to an overall "B" (3.0) average by that time, the student will be dismissed for academic reasons.

Inquiries should be directed to the director of advanced education.
