Teaching
Awards 2009
Dagate Receives
LSUHSC Copping Award
In the LSU System, the
Allen A Copping Excellence
in Teaching Award is the
highest award given for
teaching and is,
therefore, a coveted
honor. Dr. John Dagate is
the winner of the 2009
award. He is associate
professor in the
Department of
Comprehensive Dentistry
and Biomaterials. He is
also director of the LSUSD
Dental Clinic at the Huey
P. Long Medical Center in
Alexandria.
The award is named for
Dr. Copping, a much
beloved former dean of
LSUSD who also served as
chancellor of the LSU
Health Sciences Center and
president of the LSU
System. The purpose is to
applaud teachers who
exemplify the highest
ideals of teaching,
demonstrate a lifelong
quest for discovery and
inspire their students.
Golden Apples for
Teaching Excellence
A proud academic
tradition at LSUSD is to
recognize, encourage and
document superior
teaching. Thus, at the end
of each school year,
students in dentistry,
dental hygiene and dental
laboratory technology
select the teachers they
consider outstanding.
The result of this
selection process is the
awarding of the Golden
Apple Awards for
Excellence in Teaching.
Winners for 2009 are Drs.
Toby Cheramie, Philip
Carruth, T.G. Sarphie, Ms.
Danna Necaise and Mr.
Lawrence Frye.
Dr. Cheramie is director
of the senior clinic and
assistant professor in the
Department of
Comprehensive Dentistry
and Biomaterials. Dr.
Carruth is assistant
professor in the
Department of
Prosthodontics. Dr.
Sarphie recently retired
from the Department of
Anatomy. Mrs. Necaise is
assistant professor in the
dental hygiene program of
the Department of
Comprehensive Dentistry
and Biomaterials. Mr. Frye
is clinical associate in
the dental laboratory
technology program.
A total of six awards are
given: one for each
of the four dental
classes, one for the
dental hygiene program,
and one for the dental
laboratory technology
program. This year, a
unique situation occurred
when both second- and
third-year dental students
selected Dr. Carruth. He,
therefore, received two
Golden Apples.
