Named Head of State
Board
Charles McCabe, DMD, has
been elected president of
the Louisiana State Board
of Dentistry, the
licensing board for the
2,493 dentists and 2,016
dental hygienists
practicing in Louisiana.
This will be his second
term as president of the
board. This year marks his
14th year of service on
the board during which
time he was active in
formulating legislation to
regulate oral conscious
sedation.
Dr. McCabe is an
associate professor in the
Department of Periodontics
and has been affiliated
with the school since
1982. He received his DMD
from the University of
Pittsburgh in 1976 and
completed specialty
training in periodontics
at the Boston University
School of Graduate
Dentistry in 1980.

In 1995, he became a
diplomate of the American
Board of Periodontology.
He is also a member of the
Pierre Fauchard Academy.
He maintains a private
practice limited to
periodontics in suburban
New Orleans. Since 1988,
he has provided care to
needy and medical
compromised individuals
through the the Donated
Dental Services Program.
The state board is a
division of the Louisiana
Department of Health and
Hospitals. Its main
responsibilities are to
ascertain the fitness and
ability of dentists and
hygienists to practice,
help write legislation to
serve the public through
dentistry and prosecute
violations of the Dental
Practices Act.
