An enthusiastic turnout
of more than 75 dentists,
physicians and state
legislators made the
September open house for
the new LSUSD Dental
Clinic in Baton Rouge a
huge success, according to
Dr. Ben Record, clinic
director. "It was a great
mix of people," he said.
"The event gave us the
chance to show the value
of what we are doing now
and what we can do in the
future to help the dental
community."
The clinic is a 13-chair
facility housed inside the
LSU Surgical Center on
Perkins Road near
Bluebonnet Road. Dental
services are provided by
residents in the General
Practice Residency Program
(GPR), an intensive
12-month training program
supervised by LSUSD
faculty. The clinic
functions as a "safety
net" by caring for
patients with complex
medical and dental
conditions. These patients
usually have dental
requirements that are
outside the scope of
routine dentistry. The
clinic and GPR Program
therefore support and
expand the mission of
dentistry throughout
Louisiana.

The clinic is an
affiliate of the Earl K.
Long Medical Center
(ELKMC) and a member of
the LSU Health Care
Network. This enables
comprehensive care through
the referral network among
medical and dental
specialists.

Dr. Kevin Reed, medical
director of ELKMC, said
the LSUSD faculty and
residents provide
outstanding treatment to
many patients who would
otherwise not get care.
"The clinic is also a
great training site for
our future practitioners,"
he said. "Dr. Record does
a great job not only as a
clinician and educator but
also in promoting the
excellence of LSU in our
community."
