Remembering
Our Faculty
The LSUHSC
School of Dentistry
(LSUSD) has recently lost
one active and two retired
faculty members. We extend
our deepest sympathy to
the family, friends, and
colleagues of Drs. William
Schmidt, Anthony Carimi,
and Francis Abadie. Each
of these individuals made
a lasting impression on
dentistry and dental
education in Louisiana.
William
F. Schmidt, DDS,
passed away on Saturday,
August 30, 2014, at the
age of 67. He was a member
of the 1970 Loyola School
of Dentistry graduating
class. He served as
president of the New
Orleans Dental Association
and the New Orleans Dental
Study Club and as chairman
of the Louisiana State
Board of Dentistry Peer
Review Committee. During
his 40 years of private
practice, Dr. Schmidt
volunteered to teach at
LSUSD and also served with
the Louisiana National
Guard. Following his
retirement from private
practice, he accepted a
full-time position as a
clinical assistant
professor in the
Department of
Comprehensive Dentistry
and Biomaterials. Dr.
Schmidt is survived by his
four children.

Anthony B.
Carimi, DDS,
passed away on July 29,
2014, at the age of 88.
After graduating from
Loyola School of Dentistry
in 1949, he joined the
U.S. Air Force, leaving
the service in 1951 as a
captain in the Dental
Corps. During his many
years in private practice,
he taught part-time at
Loyola School of Dentistry
and at LSUSD. He was a
member of the LSUSD
faculty from 1970 until
his retirement in 1997. He
held various positions at
the dental school,
becoming head of the
Department of Dental
Auxiliaries in 1974. Dr.
Carimi served as president
of the New Orleans Dental
Association, Omicron Kappa
Upsilon (OKU) National
Honor Dental Society,
Loyola Dental Alumni Club,
Gentilly Rotary Club, and
the New Orleans Dental
Study Club. He also served
as chairman and president
of the New Orleans Dental
Conference. Dr. Carimi is
survived by his wife Ona
Claire and their three
children.

Francis Abadie,
DDS, MAGD |
Francis R. Abadie,
DDS, MAGD, passed
away on September 1, 2014,
at the age of 86. Dr. Abadie
was a 1950 graduate of
Loyola School of Dentistry.
During the Korean War, he
served as a U.S. Army Dental
Surgeon in a MASH unit,
attaining the rank of major.
Dr. Abadie practiced
dentistry in New Orleans for
33 years. A member of the
Louisiana State Board of
Dentistry, he resigned in
1977 to join the LSUSD
part-time faculty in the
Department of General
Dentistry. In 1981 he became
a full-time faculty member
and in 1985 he started the
Advanced Education in
General Dentistry program.
Dr. Abadie was a chairman of
the New Orleans Dental
Conference, a fellow of the
International College of
Dentistry, a fellow of the
Pierre Fauchard Academy, and
a member of OKU National
Honor Dental Society. He was
also the first dentist in
Louisiana to achieve
mastership in the Academy of
General Dentistry. He
retired from LSUSD in 1997.
Dr. Abadie is survived by
his wife Louise and their
six children.
Martello
Receives Accolade
The board of directors
of United Cerebral Palsy
of Greater New Orleans
(UCP) recently honored
Frank Martello, DDS, for
his 30 years of volunteer
service with the UCP
dental clinic. Founded 50
years ago at Touro
Infirmary, the clinic is
now located at UCP
headquarters in Kenner.

Since 1984 Dr. Martello
has treated children and
adults with developmental
disabilities, cerebral
palsy, Down syndrome, and
autism. He has also served
as clinic director and on
the medical advisory board
and board of directors. In
addition, Dr. Martello has
provided gratis dental
care at the Louisiana
Special Olympics and at
the Farhad Grotto in
Harahan. A 1979 LSUSD
graduate, Dr. Martello
practices dentistry in
uptown New Orleans and is
a part-time clinical
professor in the LSUSD
Department of
Comprehensive Dentistry.
