Faculty Development Day Enlists the Support of Alumni

Held on Friday, September 26, Faculty Development Day featured a panel of seven recent graduates who discussed their educational experiences at the LSUHSC School of Dentistry (LSUSD). Representing their colleagues and classmates were Hunter Charvet (2009), Paul Perez (2011), Erin Luft Katz (2011), Phillip Petito (2012), Nicole Russo (2013), and Patrick McGee (2013). Alumni and faculty members addressed student grading, practice management training, ethics, learning environment, and curriculum gaps and redundancies.

Following the panel discussion, faculty members listened to updates and reviews of a variety of topics, including the use of technology to enhance the classroom experience, the Council of Dental Accreditation process scheduled for 2016, curriculum changes for the D1 and D2 classes, the recent Interprofessional Education Day, and the exam question workshop which was held in March. Coordinated by Dr. Kitrina G. Cordell and committee chair, Dr. Paul Fidel, the goal of the day-long event was to improve and strengthen student education at LSUSD.

The 8th annual Clifton O. Dummett, Jr., Memorial Lecture, a two-day program held on September 26-27, attracted 99 attendees. N. Sue Seale, DDS, MSD, regents professor and former chair of pediatric dentistry at Baylor College of Dentistry, presented "New Paradigms in Pediatric Pulp Therapy" on Friday and directed a hands-on pulpotomy workshop on Saturday morning. Dr. Seale focused on evidence-based approaches to pulp therapy in both the primary and permanent dentitions.

Dr. Seale is editor-in-chief of Pediatric Dentistry, the major journal for the specialty, as well as author of 87 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

General dentists, pediatric dentists, and staff members are invited to attend the annual Dummett Lecture, which addresses current issues in dentistry for the pediatric patient. The lecture honors the memory of Dr. Cliff Dummett, who taught pediatric dentistry at LSUSD from 1974-2006, and served as head of the department of pediatric dentistry from 2000-2006.
