LSUSD
Captures History With
Loyola Photographs
In the spirit of
preserving the memory of
early dental graduates who
laid the foundation of
professional dentistry in
Louisiana, LSU School of
Dentistry began an effort
in 1996 to restore,
archive, and display a
collection of historical
dental class composites.
Donated to the school when
the Loyola University
School of Dentistry closed
its doors in 1971, the
collection includes
cherished photographs from
as far back as 1917 up to
the composite of the last
Loyola class, which
graduated in 1971.
Although a number of class
composites have been
salvaged from the archives
of the New Orleans Dental
College, Tulane University
School of Dentistry, and
Loyola University School
of Dentistry, the LSUSD
collection remains
incomplete.
The 1996 renovation and
dedication of a seminar
room at LSUSD honoring the
late Marie Burns Copping
spurred the effort to
restore and present the
photos for public viewing.
Many fondly remember Mrs.
Copping, who for many
years worked in the
department of student
affairs at the Loyola
School of Dentistry. She
made an indelible mark on
those who knew her. Kind,
supportive, and loving are
only a few of the words
used to describe her. The
renovation presented the
ideal opportunity to
display the photos
prominently as a testament
to the many lives she
touched. The Marie Burns
Copping Room and adjoining
hall, where the photos are
displayed, is located in
E.E. Jeansonne Clinic
Building, Room 2309.
In response to appeals
for donations of the
missing photos, several
Loyola dental graduates
have offered their class
composites so that they
could be reproduced and
displayed in "Marie's
Room."
In addition to the class
composites, LSUSD is
seeking all of the
yearbooks for the Loyola
University School of
Dentistry and any other
historical photos or items
of interest. To donate to
the collection, please
call the LSUSD Office of
Alumni Relations at (504)
619-8367.
