LSU
School of Dentistry Clinic -
Baton Rouge
Information for Health
Professionals
The General Practice Residency
(GPR) Program is an advanced
education program. Every year, 11
to 13 residents undergo an
intensive 12-month training
program under the supervision of
LSUSD faculty with specialties in
comprehensive restorative
dentistry, hospital dentistry,
sedation dentistry, endodontics,
prosthodontics, periodontics, and
oral surgery. Half of the
residents are based in Baton Rouge
and practice out of a clinic
located inside of Our Lady of the
Lake Hospital. Half of the
residents are based in New Orleans
and practice out of the University
Medical Center Hospital.
The services provided by the GPR
residents function as a "safety
net" for dentists and physicians
around the state and especially in
the greater Baton Rouge area. This
means that specialized care, often
called "hospital dentistry", is
provided to patients with complex
medical and dental conditions.
Residents in the GPR Program also
support the dental community
throughout Louisiana by providing
the intense care required by
"special needs" patients,
including:
- Those with developmental
disabilities including gag
reflex problems,
- Patients requiring general
anesthesia,
- Patients needing moderate oral
and IV sedation due to medical
or severe
- Medically compromised patients
who need care in a comprehensive
dental/medical setting,
- Medicaid children and teens
requiring IV or oral sedation,
and
- Patients referred by any
dentist or physician, including
specialists with Our Lady of the
Lake Regional Medical Center.
Typically, these are patients
who require dental clearance
prior to chemotherapy,
radiation, heart valve or joint
replacement.
The LSUSD Clinic is an affiliate
of Our Lady of the Lake Regional
Medical Center (OLOL) and a member
of the LSU Healthcare Network.
These connections enable
comprehensive care through the
referral network among medical and
dental specialists. The
affiliation with OLOL also means
that residents receive advanced
training in clinical medicine,
oral and maxillofacial surgery,
anesthesia and comprehensive
dentistry. Care is provided at
discounted rates.
The LSUSD Clinic also serves as a
learning center for “teaching
dental cases.” GPR residents are
given advanced training in
comprehensive restorative
dentistry that includes:
- Implant retained prosthetics
- Patients with
temporomandibular disorders
(TMD) or concerns,
- Crowns and bridges,
- Removable prosthetics, and
- Oral pathology.
The LSUSD Clinic in Baton Rouge
is under the direction of Dr.
Lynda Harhad. Referrals to
the clinic can be sent via fax to
her attention.
